Beaver Creek and Black Rock Creek, Hagerstown, MD- A major grant for stream restoration for these streams will be provided by Washington County. Beaver Creek restoration design will be completed by June. Permits and contractor should be approved in the fall of 2003. Construction will begin in 2004. The Black Rock Creek design phase will start next year and construction is slated for 2005.
Additional work will also be completed downstream of the bridge crossing on Beaver Creek Church Road onto the Baker Property, including about 1,800 feet of degraded stream in need of repair. Cattle have been fenced away from the stream and trees and shrubs have been planted.
The Federation of Fly Fishers has made Beaver Creek one of their national projects and has listed it on their conservation web page. The Beaver Creek Watershed Association has been established, partnerships have been made with the Washington County Soil Conservation District, Chesapeake Bay Foundation and National Capital and Seneca Valley Chapters of Trout Unlimited. Maryland DNR has also made a decision to change the regulation on a mile of Beaver Creek from “Put and Take” to “Catch and Release, Artificial Flies”. This change will make Beaver Creek the second stream in the state to have this regulation. The regulation change is effective on January 1, 2004.
